It can be a real challenge to reach out in compassion to someone who is hurt and imbalanced, especially if they are lashing out in rage. The torrent of angry words and actions can seem like a great divide that cannot be breached. But just like a wounded animal can snarl and bite and be vicious; so, too, can a wounded human. And anyone who has rescued abused animals knows that, although it is dangerous, and has to be approached with caution and skill, only a kind and compassionate response can rehabilitate a wounded animal. This is also true of our fellow human beings. Retribution and hate and punishment are never permanent answers. Walk tall, be strong; be the bridge.
